Poco - Blue And Gray

Review by John Rash

The album Blue And Gray by Poco is a stunning piece of music that is sure to leave listeners wanting more. The band's unique blend of country, rock, and folk is on full display here, with each track showcasing their talent and versatility.

From the opening notes of "Glorybound," it's clear that Poco has something special in store for listeners. The track is a soaring anthem that sets the tone for the rest of the album. "Blue Water" is another standout, with its beautiful harmonies and catchy melody.

One of the most impressive things about Blue And Gray is the way that Poco manages to tell a cohesive story throughout the album. The title track, "Blue And Gray," is a haunting ballad that explores the themes of love and loss in the context of the Civil War. "Neil Young" is a tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter, and "Magnolia" is a beautiful ode to the South.

About Poco

American country rock band originally formed in 1968 and born from the wreckage of . They can rightly claim the distinction of being among the first bands to cross over from rock to country. The band begins its live career at using a couple of different names. Billed as Pogo, the band made their debut at a Monday hoot night. Mondays in 1968 October were 7th, 14th, and 21st. They played a five song set. It immediately gets rave notices for their tight, energetic and upbeat sets. They managed to bank effectively on their positive energy and what appeared at the time to be a logical extension of Furay and Messina's work on the final album Last Time Around. Consisting of pedal steel player , singer and guitarist , singer and guitarist , bassist and drummer . Randy Meisner's tenure with ends during the recording of their first album. He participates in the early shows of 1969, but is gone by April. Over the years, Pocos members including veteran singer-guitarist came and went. That left Young as Pocos sole constant. Young was at every single gig Poco has played since its inception. And he was there with singer , drummer and keyboardist when Poco recorded its latest studio album, 2013s All Fired Up.

Woefully underrated, "Blue and Gray" remains an musically ambitious concept album. Young and Cotton's songs perfectly compliment each other.

If most people remember Paul Cotton at all, it is for "Heart Of The Night" from 1978's Legend album. Paul was a fine songwriter and guitarist (listen to Paul's growling white Gretch Falcon here and tell me he isn't great). For my money he was, for a 15 year stretch, the world's finest singer. It's a shame that so few people appreciated hem during his life. RIP Paul Cotton. You will be missed.

A brilliant cut from Blue and Grey-one of my all time favorite albums. I’ve never understood how and/or why it flew under the radar all these years.

This album is a great example of Poco's lyrical and musical brilliance. Poco was truly seminal in the evolution of country - rock, but unfortunately they're today not often enough given due recognition. I saw them play live at Massey Hall in Toronto in around 1969, when Jim Messina was still in the band; they brought the whole place cheering to its feet. It was one of the best live performances I've ever seen in my life.

Loved this song. I bought this album as a "notched" album which meant, I was told, it was reduced because of poor sales. Like Bob Seger's "Stranger in Town

such a beautiful, totally overlooked album. These are tales of the
Civil War era, but this isn't some dusty historical relic. At the peak
of his powers--as he is here--Paul Cotton may have been the finest male
singer of his time. For me, this is a "desert island" pick, and I'm not
even kidding. The songwriting is excellent, the vocals are superb; the
production is crisp and clean and always on point. If Legend led you
here, be prepared for a surprise. Give a listen or 10; you'll be glad
you did.
