Notes
- This version is similar to Messages but has no 'DB' etch on B side runout.
- Grey Labels with production credited ONLY to Mike Howlett. For different variation see here: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Messages
- Produced at Advision Studio
- Published by DinSong Ltd/Virgin Music Publishers Ltd
- ℗ © 1980 DinDisc
- The original album version of "Messages" was due to be used. However, Andy McCluskey of the band objected to this version and wanted to re-record the song. The 10,000 copies cut with the original mix were scrapped and a new, radically different version was recorded under the control of producer Mike Howlett.
- "Taking Sides Again" is an instrumental 'dub' version of "Messages".
- The original release had a two-tone grey label which listed Chester Valentino (aka Paul Collister) as producer. DinDisc had scrapped the original album mix but hadn't bothered amending the labels which should have correctly credited Mike Howlett. Later releases in a pink/white combination and later still in red, would correctly list Howlett.
- [Track times not listed on the sleeve or record labels.]
- Most copies of the original 10" pressing with the album version were scrapped, but a handful did escape destruction. Some of these were given away as part of a competition for the OMD fan club in 1980. This issue is one of these only distinguished by the shorter track time and runout information.
- The later Grey two tone labels incorrectly state the producer as Chester Valentino. Mike Howlett is the producer, as the track was remixed and times at 4:48 - later editions again feature Grey labels correctly attributed to Mike Howlett and were also issued with different coloured record labels including Red, Green and a Pink/White combination. These labels also correctly credit Mike Howlett for the production.
- Silver plastic injected labels have "Made in France" as part of matrix stamping. Picture sleeve is very similar to other countries with slight modifications to the back including "Printed in France" small text at bottom.
- on side b "taking sides again" is noted "produced by C Valantino & OMD" there is a mistake
- Came with early Pre-orders of "Pretending To See The Future" Book Limited number
- All early pre-orders from Pledge will also receive an exclusive flexi-disc featuring a very rare and previously unheard demo of Messages from the summer of 1978 before Andy and Paul actually formed Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Recorded in the garage studio of school friend Paul Collister who would become OMD’s manager, and featuring the electronic drums built by Paul Humphreys. This is sound of two eighteen year old kids
- Grey Labels with production credited ONLY to Mike Howlett. For different variation see here: Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Messages.
- This version is similar to Messages but has a 'DB' etch on B side runout.
- Misprint: both A and B labels show "Produced By Chester Valentino And Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark"

- Pressed by CBS, identifiable by the "⋀" in the runout.
- came as a free bonus with the book "Pretending To See The Future"

About Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
English electronic band formed in Wirral, Merseyside, in 1978 with Paul Humphreys (synthesizers) and Andy McCluskey (vocals and bass guitar). Earlier incarnations of their band included 'VCL XI' and 'Hitlerz Underpantz'.
They played their first gig in 1978 at Eric's (Liverpool), then had a run of UK chart hits after swapping labels from Factory to the Virgin owned label DinDisc starting with the 1980 release 'Messages'. In 1980, drummer Malcolm Holmes and Dave Hughes on synths transitioned from guest/live musicians to be full members of the band. Hughes left 1980 and was replaced by Martin Cooper.
Humphreys left the group in 1989, but McCluskey made a comeback in 1991 with the UK top 5 'Sailing On The Seven Seas', and followed that up with a UK top 3 Album 'Sugar Tax' before finally calling it a day in 1996.
In 2007 they toured together again featuring the classic line-up of Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys, Malcolm Holmes and Martin Cooper and released a live-album in 2008: 'OMD Live: Architecture & Morality & More'. September 2010 saw the release of History Of Modern featuring the original classic line-up. This has been followed by English Electric (2013) & The Punishment of Luxury (2017) and OMD also performs live extensively.

As a kid i used to stay with my sister as weekends, one Saturday night we visited a friend of hers who's husband was a DJ had a state of the art Hi-Fi, he played this, awesome tune, now in my 50's and i still play it
For me this is the best song EVER.
I first heard that song in a Citroen in 1980, as a kid. I've been obsessed with it, ever since. And old Citroens!! Hahahahaha! :)
Sounds as good today as it did almost 30 years ago.
On the b side of this record was 1, Waiting For The Man, & 2, Taking Sides Again.
