Nirvana - The Rajis Burning Down

Review by Robson Moulin

Nirvana's album The Rajis Burning Down is a powerful and haunting work that showcases the band's raw energy and emotional depth. The album is filled with intense guitar riffs, pounding drums, and Kurt Cobain's signature vocals, all of which combine to create a sound that is both aggressive and introspective.

From the opening track, "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter," the band sets a tone of urgency and intensity that carries through the entire album. Songs like "Serve the Servants" and "Dumb" showcase Cobain's ability to write lyrics that are both deeply personal and universally relatable, while tracks like "Pennyroyal Tea" and "All Apologies" demonstrate the band's gift for crafting unforgettable melodies.

Perhaps the most striking aspect of The Rajis Burning Down is the way in which it captures the spirit of its time. Released in 1993, the album is a product of the grunge era, and it reflects the disillusionment and angst that defined that period. However, it also transcends its moment, speaking to larger themes of alienation, despair, and the search for meaning in a chaotic world.

I played/jammed at Raji's and saw many a bands play their in around 1986. A great hole in the wall in east hollywood far away from the hair bands playing on the sunset strip. This show (from the sound of the crowd) seemed like a HUGE show for Raji's. The band is crazy tight and sounds great! This was one of the only bars/venues you could play or go to in Hollywood that wasn't part of the Poison/Warrant crowd. Tool had one of there first gigs there and way too many others to mention. My ears are still ringing from the time Charlie Sexton and Steve Jones jammed their one night! RIP Dobs and Raji's

I was there. I was living in the dorms at CSUN, Northridge, CA., and my drummer friend said that night, "Hey, let's go to this place called Raji's and check out this band". So we went. And I thought they sucked ass. Still do. I was 20 years old, and I guess even at that young age, I never had so much anger dwelling within me. So yeah...they were a bunch of talentless noisemakers to me. Of course, I was raised in a professional musicians' household--m father writes music for movies and TV shows, and my mother was a relative star singer back in the late 60's in her own right...so I have quality music in my bloodstream--unlike the utter shit that I attended that evening. We left early--I remember that much, and NEVER looked back a second time at these (at the time) utter shit musicians. Little was I to know that in '95, the drummer of all people was to hit the musicscene hard with the Foo Fighters--a truly talented band indeed. But Nirvana in 1990? Naw. Complete shit. So all you Millenials who adore Kurt--it's now your turn to have a go at me and my opinion here. All you stupid, stupid, face-buried-in-your-iphone, left-wing, LOSERS. Just like Kurt. I mean...GOD did they suck back then. Sure, they improved...but just listen to this audio? Even as stoned as I most assuredly was back then and at this show....they were patently UNLISTENABLE back then in their early years. Just utter SHITE in every sense of the word. Went home with a young lady, I remember that much...so the evening wasn't a total loss....LOL.
