Review by Koen Mertens

The 1931 Kings of Swing album by Luis Russell and Don Redman is a masterpiece of jazz music. The album features some of the most outstanding musicians of the time, including Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Fats Waller, and Henry "Red" Allen. The album is a collection of swing tunes that showcase the incredible talents of these musicians.

The album opens with "The New Call of the Freaks," a tune that features a driving rhythm section and powerful horn section. The tune sets the tone for the rest of the album, which is full of energetic, upbeat swing tunes. The album also includes some slower, more melodic tunes, such as "Sweet Sue, Just You" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The House of David Blues," which features some incredible solos by Benny Carter and Coleman Hawkins. The tune is a perfect example of the tight, intricate arrangements that were a hallmark of the swing era.
