Lord Kitchener - Sugar Bum Bum

Review by Dr. Reinhard Goy

Lord Kitchener's album Sugar Bum Bum is a classic example of calypso music at its finest. Released in 1958, the album features some of the most beloved songs in the genre, including the title track "Sugar Bum Bum" and "Mama Look a Boo Boo."

With his smooth vocals and witty lyrics, Lord Kitchener effortlessly transports listeners to the sunny beaches of the Caribbean. The album is a celebration of life, love, and the joys of island living.

One of the standout tracks is "My Wife's Nightie," a hilarious song about a man who can't stop admiring his wife's lingerie. The catchy melody and playful lyrics make it an instant classic.

Me and my dad drove all over the country, he used to time our trips by how long the Kitchener tape lasted. I do the same with my son now ❤

Quite possibly the most popular calypso of all time. This thing was playing everyday in night clubs, radio stations, beach parties and dance halls for over a year back in St.Lucia. I think it was 1978. Tourists really loved it too. What a song! People would stop what they were doing to hear this anytime it played. Fantastic.

You know the real word wasn’t “bum”, it was “pom”, you can guess what that means.

I don't know how many people recall the Jackson 5 on their first and only visit to Trinidad & Tobago in 1977/78 performed this calypso ? The Jackson Brothers inclusive of Michael learnt the song in 2 weeks and gave a great performance inclusive of beating the iron. I was not allowed to go too their concert but I saw the performance on TTT afterwards and I was in awe of Michael and his brothers. MJ was a true musical genius like Lord Kitchener to learn a soca tune in 2 weeks and put down a noteworthy rendition. May our griots and songsters who have passed to the great beyond continue to show their God given talents to the Angels.

One of my moms favorite songs, we wore out the Kitchener and Sparrow cassettes my mom brought with her when she moved to America. This is the foundation of this great music we call Soca to me. Kitchener was just so amazing.
