Review by Beat Bruecklmayer

Organ Works by Liszt, Reubke, Mendelssohn is a captivating album that showcases the virtuosity and musicality of Stephen Cleobury. The album features three monumental works for the organ, each with its own unique character and challenges.

The opening track, Franz Liszt's Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H, is a tour-de-force of technical prowess and expressive power. Cleobury's performance is both precise and emotive, capturing the grandeur and drama of this masterpiece.

The second piece, Julius Reubke's Sonata on the 94th Psalm, is a lesser-known gem of the organ repertoire. Cleobury's rendition brings out the full scope of Reubke's vision, from the hauntingly beautiful Adagio to the thunderous finale.

Finally, Felix Mendelssohn's Sonata No. 1 in F Minor is a true crowd-pleaser, with its catchy melodies and lively rhythms. Cleobury infuses his interpretation with a sense of joy and playfulness, making this piece a delight to listen to.

Throughout the album, Cleobury demonstrates his technical mastery of the organ, as well as his deep understanding of each composer's style and intent. The recording quality is excellent, capturing the full range and richness of the instrument.

Born: October 22, 1811, Doborján, Austria-Hungary (present-day Raiding, Austria). Died: July 31, 1886, Bayreuth, Germany. Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor, music teacher, arranger, organist, philanthropist, author, nationalist and a Franciscan tertiary. He was a renowned performer throughout Europe, noted especially for his showmanship and great skill with the piano. To this day, he is considered by some to have been the greatest pianist in history. Liszt's musical invention went into territories which were then almost unexplored, in particular as regards harmonic research, as emerges from the late piano works, which led him to anticipate fragments of harmonies from the early twentieth century. His preference for program music is testified by the numerous symphonic poems he composed. Father-in-law to .
