Notes
- From a ClassicalNet review of the remastered Everest CD by Robert Stumpf II.
- "The remastered sound in this disc is more involving than the EMI (CD: Janson, Oslo Philharmonic). It is almost as if Stokowski had been listening to Shostakovich's Quartets and saw this symphony in that light. The interplay of the orchestra catches my attention again and again. There is a more oriental atmosphere here than in any other interpretation. The strings have more of a poignancy than the Oslo Philharmonic. In all, this is my favorite recording of this masterpiece and arguably one of the best ever."
About Leopold Stokowski, The Stadium Symphony Orchestra Of New York, Dmitri Shostakovich
Born: September 12 1906 (Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire)
Died: August 09, 1975 (Moscow, USSR)
Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich
Russian / Soviet composer, pianist, musical and public figure, teacher, professor. Father of the conductor and pianist .
People's Artist of USSR (1954). Hero of Socialist Labor (1966). Lenin Prize (1958), five Stalin Prizes (1941, 1942, 1946, 1950, 1952), the USSR State Prize (1968) and the Glinka State Prize of the RSFSR (1974).
Dmitry Shostakovich became a world-famous composer at the age of 20, when his First Symphony was performed in concert halls of the USSR, Europe and the United States. 10 years later, his operas and ballets were performed in the world's leading theaters. 15 symphonies of Shostakovich were called by contemporaries "the Great epoch of Russian and world music".
His vast production includes, in addition to symphonic and choral music, 15 string quartets and various chamber, ballet and film music.
Shostakovich was in fact one of the most prolific authors of film music in Soviet Russia.

Who did the drawing ????
As far as I konw, this recording is the most attractive and irresistible. It reminds me of my good old days and makes me happy. Thank you.
shitty performance.
I bought this vinyl way back in the autumn of 1974 at my college bookstore when I found out our school orchestra (in which I played tuba) was to perform it the following spring. This is the recording of Dmitri's 5th that I keep going back to; I can always tell it is this one by the blown trumpet note at 4:02 in the first movement. Leopold must have been under time constraints in the studio that prevented another take of this movement. Either that or there were worse errors in the other takes. Ha ha. Anyway. This recording seems to sound overall much better than my (now worn out) vinyl. It is my understanding that many of Everest's recordings have been digitally remastered for CD. Perhaps this was, too. Many, many thanks.
Magnificent symphony,great performance????????
