Kingston Trio - The Final Concert

Review by Martin Bartonitz

The Kingston Trio's The Final Concert is a fitting tribute to the legendary folk group's long and storied career. Recorded live in 1987 at the Santa Barbara County Bowl, this album captures the Trio's signature sound and energy as they perform many of their greatest hits and fan favorites.

From the opening notes of "Hard, Ain't It Hard" to the closing strains of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" the trio's harmonies and musicianship are in top form. The album features several standout tracks, including "M.T.A.," "Tom Dooley," and "Scotch and Soda," all of which showcase the Trio's unique blend of traditional folk and modern pop sensibilities.

The Final Concert also includes several poignant moments, such as when the group pays tribute to founding member Dave Guard, who passed away in 1991. The Trio's heartfelt performance of "Guard Years" is a touching reminder of the impact Guard had on the group and the folk music scene as a whole.

US folk group formed in 1957. Disbanded in 1967. Bob Shane revived the group in 1969 (the only original member at the time). Nick Reynolds, another of the originals, re-joined from 1988 to 1999. Having gone through many iterations the group is still performing, though none of the original members are in the line-up as they have all passed on. Following a relicensing of the name in 2017, the continuity members of the band (George Grove, Bill Zorn and Rick Dougherty) were replaced by a new lineup including Josh Reynolds (son of original member Nick Reynolds) and his cousin Mike Marvin, along with Tim Gorelangton. In 2018 Reynolds was replaced by Bob Haworth and later Don Marovich.
