Beautiful ! Thank you for posting :)
Lovely playing! Such good taste and brillant touch!
Maestro!
It's interesting to note that the international piano competition bearing his name, held July, 2021, awarded NO 1st place winner. Instead, they awarded two pianists second prize. Maybe they were waiting for Iturbi's ghost to join the contest?
Jose Iturbi was well known and popular on our radio in the fifties. I have seen an appearance of him on the piano on our first TV (in 1958, I was 20), don't remember the music, and maybe it was not life. Thank you David.
Wahrlich genialer Pianist!
To add my reminiscence: I first heard Chopin at age 4. My dad had purchased a red-tinted clear vinyl 45 during the fifties. (I discovered it amongst the pile of English recordings of Gilbert & Sullivan musicals he obtained during WWII while stationed in England.) Anyway, the 45 was Artur Rubinstein performing this piece. Enchanted. A glimpse of another world yet to be discovered years later.
Wow!!! I think this might be my favourite interpretation of this piece. The phrasing is so precise and sensitive!
Thanks for this . . . and all the other links to fabulous Chopin interpretations david !
In 1946/47 I was four years old when my dad brought this 78 rpm record from the “big city” to our rural South African town. It was the first time I had heard classical music & I couldn’t stay away from it. Little did I imagine that at age 79 I would be sitting in rural Australia listening to the same record, and immediately recognising the pianist. Thank you very, very much, David! (The thumbs-up button has stopped functioning, but I did use it.)
Iturbi re-recorded this in the 1950s and it wasn't as good as this.
Jose Iturbi was awesome. Never forgotten!
Iturbi was great
Dear David: thank you for this upload. Iturbi was a great-if forgotten- pianist.
I suggest you listen to Artur Moreira-Lima, the Brazilian who was runner-up to Martha Argerich in the 1965 Chopin Competition.
I also recommend you hear Adam Harasiewicz, another laureate of that Concours, albeit a different year.
Best regards!
