Johnny Clarke - Babylon

Review by nischint pal

Babylon, the album by reggae legend Johnny Clarke, is a timeless classic that captures the essence of Jamaican music in the 1970s. Released in 1976, the album features some of Clarke's most iconic tracks, including "Enter Into His Gates with Praise," "None Shall Escape the Judgment," and "Jah Jah We Are Waiting."

From the first note to the last, Babylon is a masterclass in roots reggae. Clarke's soulful voice is backed by a tight rhythm section, featuring the legendary Sly and Robbie on drums and bass. The album's production is sparse but powerful, with a focus on the driving basslines and hypnotic drum patterns that are the hallmark of Jamaican music.

The lyrics on Babylon are a potent mix of social commentary and spiritual upliftment. Clarke's songs address the struggles of the oppressed and the need for spiritual redemption, with a message that is as relevant today as it was four decades ago. The album's title track, "Babylon," is a scathing critique of the corrupt systems of power that oppress the poor, while "None Shall Escape the Judgment" is a haunting meditation on the inevitability of divine justice.
