Painter and composer John Townsend was born in England but has lived in France since 1967. In his studio near Uzès, using local ochres and pigments, John paints acrylic-based 'sandscapes' of peaceful horizons and places of quiet solitude - moments of light and mellow mists.
As an inquisitive traveller John has always been drawn to the wild empty spaces at the ends of the earth where he has tried to capture the atmosphere of their lonely poetry through music and film, sketches and watercolours.
He is almost exclusively inspired by all those peaceful places where we can get away from busy-ness, and by horizons which seem to melt into the sky - mist moving and softening everything it touches then slipping away to reveal pockets of sharpness.
He has released three instrumental CDs, available at his homepage.
