John Entwistle - Smash Your Head Against The Wall

Review by Alice Elwood

Smash Your Head Against The Wall, the debut solo album by John Entwistle, is a unique and experimental work that showcases the bassist's wide-ranging musical talents. Released in 1971, the album features a mix of hard rock, blues, and avant-garde elements that set it apart from the typical rock music of the era.

The album's opening track, "My Size," is a hard-hitting rocker that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Entwistle's bass playing is front and center, driving the song forward with its aggressive, propulsive energy. Other standout tracks include the bluesy "Ted End," the quirky "I Believe in Everything," and the epic closer "Shakin' All Over."

Throughout the album, Entwistle showcases his versatility as a musician, playing multiple instruments and experimenting with different sounds and textures. His vocals are also a highlight, ranging from gritty and powerful to tender and emotive.

The Who's bass player extraordinaire debut's with an album full of solid songs, thought-provoking lyrics and strong production values. The only caveat is that, like Procul Harum, the focus here is on the darker side of human nature. And though religion lurks in the background of several tunes, it's a message being told from the other side of the theological mirror. "You're Mine, for example, is sung by the devil (or a highly ranked minion). "I Believe in Everything" is a hedge-your-bets" proclamation, what are we doing here a sneering tribute to Life Hereafter. The tunes are well-crafted and as catchy as they come. But be prepared for liberal doses of absinthe...
Intro sounds a bit like "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath...Who (sorry about the pun) came first?
By the way, I bought this album back in the day (early 70s).
To my mind John had two great "Who" songs; "Boris the Spider

As a big Who fan, back in the mid 70s, I discovered a few of John's albums in the bargain bins, big shame as John in my opinion was helluva more talent than Townshend!

A fantastic classic album.
Back in the day, the Who would open up with either "Can't Explain" or John's "Heaven and Hell". Being both a serious Who and Kinks buff, I always thought there was a sort of Ray-Dave parallel to Pete and John, but without all the aggro in the case of the Who. Serious talent always overshadowed.
