Notes
- Both sessions were originally recorded in New York City, Dec. 1957.
- Manufactured in Europe. HQ Virgin Vinyl 140 gram. Printed in 2013 by DOL, a trademark of VINYLOGY.
- Recorded in NYC in 1957 and originally released on the small Bethlehem Records, this LP contains 2 amazing sessions: Session B (tracks A1, A2 – B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5, “Oasis,” previously unreleased on LP) features a 15-piece big band led by Art Blakey who was in transition with his Jazz Messengers at the time. The band he put together for this session explores some wilder numbers, like Melba Liston’s “Late Date”, which would not have been out of place with the Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra (the horn players are all Gillespie graduates), along with some more conservative material, such as Jerry Valentine’s “Midriff” (which is a nod to Count Basie’s post-war orchestra), giving us an interesting look at how Coltrane handles himself playing in this unusual environment. Session C (A3, A4) is also a rare glimpse at a young John Coltrane, this time playing his own music in a quintet format (led by Art Blakey and also featuring Donald Byrd, Walter Bishop, Jr., and Wendell Marshall). Coltrane’s highly-praised “Pristine” would not have been out of place on his landmark "Blue Train" album.

About John Coltrane
American saxophonist and jazz composer.
Born: 23 September 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA.
Died: 17 July 1967 in Huntington, Long Island, New York, USA (aged 40) from liver cancer.
John Coltrane was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His early recordings capture a musician in the relatively conventional confines of bebop and hardbop, but his enduring legacy primarily rests on the modal jazz pioneered by his classic quartet (1960-64) and by free jazz explorations late in his career.
He recorded more than fifty albums as a leader and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, performing with other giants of jazz like and . Coltrane received numerous awards including a posthumous "Special Citation" from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007 for his 'masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship and iconic centrality to the history of jazz'.
As his life progressed, his music and outlook became increasingly spiritual. After his death he was proclaimed as a saint by the African Orthodox church that took his name.
Coltrane's second wife was pianist ; their son is also a saxophonist.

Comments
Art Blakey is the true leader here, though he rarely performed in the big band format. Blakey was in a transitional state with the Jazz Messengers, and this lp, originally released on the Bethlehem label, is a one-time situation with Blakey leading a 15-piece orchestra that echoes the sounds of both the Dizzy Gillespie big band and Count Basie's orchestra in spots, while forging the straight-ahead hard bop style developed in the 1950's. Coltrane had recently released "Dakar" and "Coltrane", and was recording "Blue Trane" for Blue Note at basically the same time as he was working with Blakey's groups for Bethlehem, but wasn't yet the focal point of any group of musicians in any format; he's playing here as a sideman, along with fellow sax player Al Cohn, and a host of quality players of the era. Essentially, this lp is Coltrane sitting in with Blakey's group in two formats. Session B (tracks A1, A2 - B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5, ("Oasis," previously unreleased on LP) features the 15-piece big band led by Blakey. Tracks A3 and A4, "Tippin" (a Donald Byrd composition), and "Pristine" (penned by Coltrane himself), are quintet pieces, and "Pristine" in particular is worth a listen as it anticipates some of Trane's sheet-of-sound quality that still startles and inspires. Probably not in the "must have" category of albums, but there are few other lp's that fit this very particular niche in the Art Blakey discography. Worth looking for.
Sublime!
