Johannes Brahms Claudio Abbado Wiener Philharmoniker Berliner Philharmoniker Staatskapelle Dresden London Symphony Orchestra - 4 Symphonies

Review by Bjorn Henry Mosth

The album 4 Symphonies by Johannes Brahms, conducted by Claudio Abbado and performed by the Wiener Philharmoniker, Berliner Philharmoniker, Staatskapelle Dresden, and London Symphony Orchestra, is a stunning collection of some of the greatest symphonic works in classical music history.

The album opens with Symphony No. 1, which features a powerful and dramatic opening movement that sets the tone for the entire piece. The orchestra's precision and attention to detail are evident throughout, and the dynamic range is impressive.

Symphony No. 2 is a more subdued and introspective work, but still features moments of grandeur and beauty. The Wiener Philharmoniker's performance of the third movement is particularly noteworthy, with its lush strings and delicate woodwinds.

Symphony No. 3 is perhaps the most complex of the four, with its intricate counterpoint and shifting moods. The Berliner Philharmoniker's performance is masterful, capturing the work's many nuances and subtleties.

Finally, Symphony No. 4 is a triumphant and majestic work, with a soaring finale that leaves a lasting impression. The Staatskapelle Dresden's performance is particularly impressive, with its powerful brass and soaring strings.

This is beutiful. Some recordings sound so anemic, this has momentum and depth!

Thank you for making this unforgettable performance available again. This is a "desert island" Brahms recording, along with the 1949 Menuhin/Furtwangler/Lucerne Festival Orchestra recording of Violin Concerto (with the the wonderful Fritz Kreisler cadenza).

P.S. This IS the Berlin Philharmonic and NOT the Dresden, which plays the Third Symphony in this set.

Jimmy Galway is playing the flute in this performance somewhat like a "flute concerto." Fantastic! Thank you for uploading
