Review by Elizabeth Stott

Die Bach Kantate is a stunning album that showcases the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by Helmuth Rilling and the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart. The album features a selection of Bach's cantatas, including BWV 78, 140, and 147, all of which are masterfully interpreted by Rilling and his ensemble.

The album is characterized by its rich, warm sound, which is perfectly suited to the sumptuous harmonies and intricate counterpoint of Bach's music. Rilling's conducting is precise and nuanced, bringing out the full emotional range of each piece, from the joyful exuberance of "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" to the poignant introspection of "Jesu, der du meine Seele".

The soloists on the album are also superb, with standout performances from soprano Arleen Augér and tenor Aldo Baldin. Their voices blend seamlessly with the choir and orchestra, creating a sense of unity and coherence that is essential to the success of any performance of Bach's music.
