Harvey Andrews - Margarita

Review by Gavin Johnson

Margarita, the latest album by Harvey Andrews, is a delightful collection of folk songs that is sure to please fans of the genre. The album features Andrews' signature acoustic guitar playing and heartfelt vocals, accompanied by a variety of instruments including piano, violin, and percussion.

The songs on Margarita cover a range of themes, from love and loss to social justice and political commentary. Andrews' lyrics are thoughtful and thought-provoking, and his storytelling ability shines through in songs like "The Ballad of Cursed Anna" and "The Last Train to London."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Margarita," a hauntingly beautiful ballad about a woman who is forced to flee her home in the midst of political turmoil. Andrews' voice is particularly powerful on this track, conveying the sadness and desperation of the song's protagonist.

Daft old bugger I am. I know this will bring me to tears every time I hear it - yet I still play it. Listened to him several times in the folk clubs around the garrisons in Germany in the '70's. Excellent performer.

This song always breaks me up.
I remember as a child being taken to visit a great aunt in Birmingham, where Harvey grew up, in the same circumstance. Heartbreaking. So much pain and loss...for what?

Those lines "She would ask "Is he smiling?" / I would stare at the frame / But the sun was there shining / Through her window again / Where that sun always shone / He had faded and gone" get me every time.

Made me cry, so evocative.  Beautiful tune; and words which are simple yet so full of meaning.  Harvey Andrews you are very talented.

Hi.  Look out for a wonderful new collection of 20 of Harvey's songs soon available from www.harveyandrews.com.  It includes an enhanced version of this classic song which, as we remember the start of The Great War, is as relevant today as it ever was.
