Review by Karen Westbrook

The album Two O'Clock Jump Taint What You Do by Harry James and His Orchestra is a classic collection of swing music that transports listeners to a bygone era. The album features James' signature trumpet sound, accompanied by the smooth vocals of Helen Forrest and a talented ensemble of musicians.

The title track, "Two O'Clock Jump," is one of the standout songs on the album, showcasing the band's ability to create a lively, danceable rhythm. Other highlights include "I've Heard That Song Before," a romantic ballad that showcases Forrest's vocal range, and "Ciribiribin," a playful tune that features a lively horn section.

where is the 1939 Hits Archive located?
At the time of this recording, Harry had only just left the financial security and star sideman status of the Goodman orchestra -- in the immediate sense, over an emotional issue that arose in connection with participation in the band's ultimate killer-diller, "Sing, Sing, Sing." Though -- or because! -- the fledgling James orchestra was scuffling, they were able to produce some very inspired music, perhaps its best, most authentic jazz ever. Listening to this rough and ready crew, we can wonder how the band would have developed if "You Made Me Love You" hadn't been its breakthrough. In any case, despite the addition of strings (which occurred prior to the recording of YMMLY), the James orchestra continued to play excellent hot swing and indeed jazz.

A true Swing classic from 1939!: Arguably Harry's best/finest Jazz recording.
