Goldenhorse - Riverhead

Review by Justin Nelson

Riverhead, the second studio album by New Zealand band Goldenhorse, is a delightful mix of folk, pop, and rock. The album, released in 2004, features 12 tracks that showcase the band's musical prowess and songwriting skills.

The opening track, "Wake Up Brother," sets the tone for the album with its upbeat rhythm and catchy melody. The album transitions into the more mellow "Golden Dawn," which highlights the band's ability to create beautiful ballads.

The title track, "Riverhead," is a standout with its haunting melody and poignant lyrics. The song is a tribute to the town of Riverhead in New Zealand, where the band members grew up.

Other notable tracks include "Maybe Tomorrow," "Northern Lights," and "Out of the Moon." Each song on the album is unique in its own way, but they all come together to create a cohesive and enjoyable listening experience.

Being a fan of Bressa Creeting Cake in the late 90s, I took the ex-GF to check out one of their very early shows c.2000 in Albert Park, Auckland as I knew Geoff Maddock was the main instigator. They were quite tentative, not the sassy confident live act they later became. Also I think they were playing some pre-'Riverhead' tunes that oddly seem to be now lost in the mists of time. I am sure some of these were recorded professionally as the band was played on bFM at the time, but they have not to my knowledge been released. Time for that rarities album, guys!

Goldenhorse band deserves to be one of the greatest in the world. Why it isn't seen as such is beyond me. They are my favorite band and this is one of my favorite songs by them.

This song is filled to the brim with pure awesomeness!!

And Kirsten Morelle looks gorgeous as always! <3
