Ginuwine - Trouble

Review by Chris Matemba

Ginuwine's album Trouble is a soulful and emotional journey through the ups and downs of relationships. The R&B artist's smooth vocals and lyrics are a perfect match for the album's themes of love, heartache, and betrayal.

The album opens with the upbeat and catchy "Pony" remix, which immediately grabs the listener's attention. From there, the album takes a more introspective turn with tracks like "What's So Different?" and "Tell Me Do U Wanna," where Ginuwine explores the complexities of love and relationships.

The album's standout track is undoubtedly "So Anxious," which features Ginuwine's signature falsetto and a seductive beat. The song perfectly captures the feeling of anticipation and longing that comes with being in love.

Throughout the album, Ginuwine showcases his impressive vocal range and ability to convey both vulnerability and strength. The production is top-notch, with a mix of classic R&B sounds and modern beats.

“Trouble” should’ve been a BIG hit. It’s great that the “A Man’s Thoughts” album hit No. 1 R&B and No. 9 pop, but this deserved to be a huge single.

Ginuwine was 38 when this came out, and it seems to be really tough for artists in their mid-30s and older to get radio airplay. That’s even the case for songs with great hit potential. Aging acts eventually become “album artists.” They begin to do well only with LP’s while getting little to no traction on radio, so they start to disappear from the main singles charts such as the Hot 100 and R&B surveys.

It’s happened with Usher, and it’s even starting to be the case, dare I say, with Beyoncé as a SOLO act! She’s continued to top singles charts but mainly as a collaborator or featured artist.

As many acts approach 40, radio seems to lose interest in them, and the quality of their music has no bearing. It’s really unfortunate that the situation has regressed so much from the ’80s when plenty of artists in their late 30s and even 40s had No. 1 hits and other big songs such as Tina Turner, Lionel Richie, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and the list goes on. And they were having commercial success right alongside much younger acts like New Edition. Heck, even the Beach Boys had an amazing comeback with the No. 1 smash “Kokomo.”

I hope Ginuwine, now 51, and other recording artists who’ve still got it can penetrate radio soon despite their advanced age. The airwaves could sure use some variety what with the same acts and songs being played ad nauseum.

2021 still bumpin!
The lead and harmony vocals are so tight on this! That “the way she pushin’ it back” line in the background sounds especially dope.
