Futurebirds - Portico I

Review by Judith Johnston

Futurebirds' debut album, Portico I, is a triumph of modern Americana. The Athens, Georgia-based band has created a sound that is both classic and contemporary, drawing on influences from country, rock, and indie music to create something wholly unique.

The album opens with the haunting "Johnny Utah," a slow-burning ballad that sets the tone for the rest of the record. From there, Futurebirds take the listener on a journey through a range of emotions and styles, from the rollicking "Wild Heart" to the dreamy "Virginia Slims."

Throughout Portico I, the band's musicianship is on full display. The guitars are crisp and twangy, the drums propulsive, and the harmonies rich and full. But what sets Futurebirds apart is their songwriting, which is both poetic and direct. Whether they're singing about heartbreak, longing, or the beauty of the natural world, their lyrics are always evocative and emotionally resonant.

Standout tracks on the album include the bittersweet "Megachills," the anthemic "Heavy Weights," and the epic closer "Man With No Knees," which builds to a thrilling crescendo of guitars and vocals.
