Federation - Scallywag Breakaway

Review by Inda García

Federation's latest album, Scallywag Breakaway, is a solid effort that showcases the band's ability to blend different genres and sounds to create a unique musical experience. The album features a mix of rock, funk, and electronic influences, with catchy hooks and grooves that will get listeners moving.

The opening track, "Get on Board," sets the tone with its upbeat tempo and funky bassline. "The Way It Goes" features a more rock-oriented sound, with heavy guitar riffs and a driving beat. "Bounce" is a standout track, with its infectious melody and playful lyrics.

Throughout the album, Federation demonstrates their versatility as musicians, seamlessly transitioning from one style to another. "Funk Meister" is a nod to their funk roots, while "Electric Love" incorporates electronic elements for a more futuristic sound.

I was born in a small town, Millom, on the Cumbrian coast but we moved to Southmead, Bristol in 1970. The Federation used to park their van a few doors up from our council house and as kids we used to peer in the back to see all their stage clothes hanging up in the back. They seemed like stars as they'd been on telly on one of the big talent shows (New Faces I think). One year when I was about 14 we went back up to Millom for our summer holidays. The only nitespot there was the Cumbria Club and advertised for the Saturday night were The Federation. Got chatting to them as they unloaded their van and they couldn't believed they'd travelled nearly 300 miles to this very remote outpost only to meet a kid who lived practically next door in Doncaster Road! I bet they don't remember, but I do.

There were lots of non hits that were great in the seventies and the variety of music is what made this decade the best in my opinion
