Comments
Released in 1999, The Marshall Suite is one of the top twenty Fall albums. The loud and manic, "Touch Sensitive" starts the album and it is a catchy, straightforward, and wonderfully melodic tune. It also features a brilliant vocal and one of my favorite lines: 'They say "What about the meek?" I say they've got a bloody cheek!" An edited (29 seconds in fact) version of the aforementioned song was later used in a UK automobile advertisement for Vauxhall Corsa. Next up, a fun but seriously demented rockabilly cover of Tommy Blake's obscure "F-'Oldin' Money." "Shake-Off" is noisy and immediate with crashing drums and a great Smith rant about "crackpot viewpoint(s)", "micro-plastering" and "that spot in the Simple Minds reform." "This Perfect Day" is a dark and edgy cover of The Saints song. I love the loud, violent, thrashing rock that is "(Jung Nev's) Antidotes." Noisy, and unexpectedly heavy but totally brilliant. "The Crying Marshal" has to be played at a very high volume, preferably on a system that goes up to a Spinal Tap 11 to be fully appreciated. It's complex, frenzied, propulsive, and strange with a thumping drum beat. Some will say The Marshall Suite is overrated while others will assure you it is most certainly underrated. Personally, I think it is one of the band's better records and a great addition to the mighty Fall canon.
