Review by Steve Paulo

The Eddie Lockjaw Davis Cookbook is a classic jazz album that showcases the musical genius of the legendary saxophonist. The album features a collection of original compositions and jazz standards that are expertly performed by Davis and his band.

The album opens with the upbeat and swinging "Have Horn, Will Blow," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Davis displays his virtuosity on the saxophone, with his smooth and soulful playing perfectly complemented by the tight and groovy rhythm section.

One of the standout tracks on the album is the bluesy "The Chef," which features a catchy melody and a memorable solo by Davis. The track also highlights the excellent musicianship of the rest of the band, including organist Shirley Scott and guitarist Jerome Richardson.

Another highlight of the album is the ballad "But Beautiful," which showcases Davis' ability to play with emotion and sensitivity. His soulful playing is accompanied by Scott's beautiful organ work, creating a beautiful and heartfelt performance.

Note for note same as Jimmy Smith's walking lines on the bass. Damn, Jimmy did his homework in the shed, on his left hand.

There perhaps exists two camps on saxophone -- in particular on that of Bb tenor, -- the first being that of Coleman Hawkins; and the other, Lester Young.  Oh do I love these two feels both.  While Lockjaw feels to come out of the Hawkins camp and bearing a wholly different and distinctive swing to his, -- that, owing, too, to his signature sound when with Count Basie, he does stand alone in terms of the Horn, its character.  Of his blues I can say this -- 'Classic!  Just listen to the tune, "The Rev."  I loved the big horn sound that is the tenor saxophone...  Jaws' was big, perhaps along with Plas Johnson's big sound (the Tenor' who played Mancini's "Pink Panther" -- oh his obbligato!)I give great nods to many the horn players, oh so many great ones.  I was but 14 or 15 when I first got wind of Jaw's big sound and characteristic playing, which I ever remembered thereafter, and always knew when it was Lockjaw blowing.
Lockjaw was  such a unique player . You can recognize him after one or two notes. Glad I saw him a lot when I had the chance.
