Diana Ross wasn't feeling right so the producer installed disco lights in the studio for her and the result was this masterpiece.

I have long believed that Diana Ross' phrasing choices and enunciation are the best I have ever heard from any vocalist -- male or female. Frank Sinatra was always lauded, deservedly, for his phrasing, but I think Ms. Ross is even better than the Chairman of the Board. I once heard an interview with Valerie Simpson in which she said that Ms. Ross had very strong ideas about how she wanted to present every song, and she said that when her approach differed from the songwriters and producers, it could make for some very long sessions. But, she also said that later, after the music had been released, and long after the dust had settled, she would listen again to the recording, and inevitably realize that Ms. Ross had been right about the choices and justified in standing her ground. This recording could be used by other vocalists as a tutorial on phrasing, timing, and enunciation, since she shifts moods and styles so many times within the song, In less than eight minutes, she is sexy, sleepy, playful, funny, aggressive, innocent, and more, and every change serves the song perfectly. It is no accident that the songwriters association once gave her its highest award. She works magic with great material, and she is able to elevate less than great material to heights the songwriter probably never imagined. A legend.
