Comments
Christine Lavin hit it out of the park on this, her third major release. Outside of the quality of her music itself, an interesting set of circumstances helped her with with this album's success. Toward the end of the 80's, several recently-formed New Age and Smooth Jazz radio stations discovered and started to play the music of Suzanne Vega and other new-age-y, ethereal singer-songwriters. At the same time along comes Christine, who had written a song called "Mysterious Woman" -- gently making fun of Suzanne Vega and other new-age-y, ethereal singer-songwriters. Catching wind of this, those same radio stations started playing "Mysterious Woman" -- and BOOM, all of a sudden Christine Lavin has a whole new nation-wide audience that might otherwise never have heard of her. Who then ran out and scooped up this album. Good thing too, as we soon discovered just how talented this lady is in fact. Songs that make you chuckle are her forte' ("Mysterious Woman", "Santa Monica Pier", and the title track are great examples), but she can also make you swoon with a romantic ballad like "Bumblebees" or "Waltzing With Him" -- and then, out of nowhere, send a chill up your spine with a song like "Never Go Back". Frankly there is no finer introduction to all the facets of Christine Lavin than this album.
