Charlie Hunter Trio - Greasy Granny Come As You Are

Review by Catur Rahmawan

The Charlie Hunter Trio's album Greasy Granny Come As You Are is a masterful blend of blues, jazz, and funk that showcases the band's virtuosity and versatility. Hunter's guitar playing is nothing short of phenomenal, with his unique eight-string instrument allowing him to play both lead and bass lines simultaneously. The rhythm section of drummer Derrek Phillips and saxophonist Skerik provides a solid foundation for Hunter's improvisations, and their interplay is tight and seamless.

The album's title track sets the tone with a funky, bluesy groove that immediately draws the listener in. From there, the trio explores a variety of moods and styles, from the soulful ballad "No Regrets" to the upbeat, Latin-tinged "Elbo Room." The standout track is "Special Shirt," a funky instrumental that showcases Hunter's incredible technique and improvisational skills.

Summary by Catur Rahmawan

Greasy Granny Come As You Are is a must-listen for fans of jazz, blues, and funk. The Charlie Hunter Trio's musicianship is top-notch, and the album's mix of original compositions and covers (including a funky take on Nirvana's "Come As You Are") keeps things fresh and interesting throughout. Highly recommended.

this isn't "smooth jazz". charlie hunter was inspired by larry young a.k.a. khalid yasin, the "coltrane of the organ". ("kenny g." is "smooth jazz".)

WONDERFUL MEMORIES!!! ?
I checked this out decades ago on Jazz Central. The beautiful Angela Stribling and the green eyed Donnie Simpson were also hosts as well as Ramsey Lewis. I saw Makoto Ozoni with Dave Brubeck on this program, as well as a Phenomenal Japanese guitarist!!! Who I cannot remember his name!!!!. He wore glasses and I think had bushy hair. Jazz Central was a top of the line program back in the day that hosted some diverse and talented performers. Now that I remember, that's when I first saw Tuck and Patti, as well as Joyce...the Brazilian guitarist.. it's a shame we don't get this GOODNESS nowadays, but times change. And it is what it is!!!
But Always Remember... Never forget ....

I'm having a hard time believing that this is the same drummer from Primus.  Jay Lane is so perfectly understated here.
