Review by Samantha Davidson

Charles Mingus' album, Plays It Cool, is a masterpiece that showcases the jazz legend's unparalleled skill and creativity. The album features a series of tracks that are both complex and accessible, with Mingus' signature bass lines weaving their way through each song.

The opening track, "Nostalgia in Times Square," sets the tone for the rest of the album with its energetic saxophone and piano solos. The album also features several memorable ballads, including "Flamingo" and "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love," which highlight Mingus' ability to convey emotion through his music.

One of the album's standout tracks is "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," which features a driving rhythm section and a series of dynamic solos. Mingus' bass work on this track is particularly impressive, as he effortlessly navigates the changes and adds his own unique flair to the piece.
