Bryn Terfel's album Bad Boys is a thrilling and dynamic collection of operatic arias and popular songs. The Welsh baritone's rich and powerful voice is perfectly suited to the dramatic repertoire of Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner, as well as the playful and seductive melodies of Cole Porter and Leonard Bernstein. Terfel's interpretation of the title track, "Bad Boys," from the musical Whistle Down the Wind, is a highlight of the album, showcasing his charisma and humor. The emotional intensity of "Di Provenza il mar" from La Traviata and "Eri tu" from Un Ballo in Maschera is balanced by the tender and romantic "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific and "She's Always a Woman" by Billy Joel. Some people take vibrato to a level well beyond artistic expression. Here, he sounds at times like a quivering leaf.. with tourettes.. made of Jell-O.. having a seizure.. while urinating on the third rail.

Great performance..BUT.. Phillip Quast is THE best Javert, bar none. Quast brings such emotion to his performance. Can't beat the man.

Bryn Terfel's voice is perfect. But he is an opera singer after all. So I am not sure if we could compare other musical actors' voice with his.

I recently had the opportunity to hear Bryn in concert. It was just him and a pianist onstage and it was absolutely marvelous! I will say I very much prefer him in that setting. I personally don't think his voice is right for the majority of popular musicals, though I did enjoy his rendition of "If I Were A Rich Man" from Fiddler. I also think he would make for a very...interesting phantom...though perhaps he shouldn't actually take on the role. As a side note, the control he has over his voice is awe-inspiring. Yes, he obviously has a lot of power in his fortissimo, but his pianissimo is to die for as well. If you ever get to see this man live in concert, don't pass it up.

I love Bryn, but it's too fast. In this case, I prefer Phillip Quest performance.
