The Nightmarish Compositions by Bishop Of Hexen is a hauntingly beautiful album that showcases the band's unique blend of symphonic black metal and gothic influences. The album is a journey through dark and twisted soundscapes, with each track offering a different glimpse into the band's sinister world.
The album opens with "The Somber Grounds of Truth", a haunting instrumental track that sets the tone for the rest of the album. From there, the band takes the listener on a journey through tracks like "A Witch King Reborn" and "The Arcanum of the Cursed", which feature thunderous drums, intricate guitar work, and haunting vocals.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Death Masquerade", which features a beautiful piano intro before launching into a barrage of blistering riffs and thunderous drums. Israel's Bishop of Hexen gained recognition only because two of their songs were put into Brutal Legend's soundtrack: stylistically, as shown on their three albums, including 2006's The Nightmarish Compositions, they're essentially a clone of Limbonic Art and Obtained Enslavement, resulting into modal minor-key progressions tending to My Dying Bride-like tonalities. The production is however poor, unbalancing the guitars in favor of the rest of the instrumentation, and the repetition of C#-minor chording and tertiary post-Opeth rhythms turns incredibly repetitive.
