Bill Evans Trio - Everybody Digs Bill Evans

Review by Mary Mart

Everybody Digs Bill Evans, the classic album by the Bill Evans Trio, is a must-have for any jazz lover's collection. The album, released in 1958, showcases the immense talent and creativity of pianist Bill Evans, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Philly Joe Jones.

From the opening track, "Minority," the listener is transported to a world of intricate melodies and harmonies that only Evans could create. His delicate touch on the keys and the way he weaves in and out of the bass and drums is nothing short of magical.

The trio's rendition of "Lucky to Be Me" is a standout track, with Evans' improvisational skills on full display. The trio's chemistry is evident in every note they play, and it's clear they were truly in sync during the recording of this album.

Other notable tracks include "Oleo" and "Young and Foolish," which showcase the trio's ability to swing with ease and create a lively and energetic atmosphere.

So sad this magnificent album didn't get a more iconic and decorative record sleeve, kinda Dark side of the moon of the Jazz Scene-thing. Something that would have stand out, something you want to have as a poster too....

When I bought this album many years ago I always loved the cover because what a great list of endorsements. This was also my first Evans album, obviously had kind of blue and liked his playing there and bought this. Cannonball’s point was extremely well put and very true! Also it’s was good to start my Evans listening with a more bop orientated rhythm section then on to what he was doing in his trio with Scottie and Paul!

Arguably Evans' finest moment. Gotta wonder what his music would have sounded like without the drugs--less brooding, less nuanced perhaps but OMG the attack on these tracks--incredible.
