Review by Tiffany Gill

The album Simple Symphony Op4 A Ceremony Of Carols by Benjamin Britten is a masterpiece that showcases the composer's immense talent and creativity. The album comprises two works by Britten, Simple Symphony Op. 4 and A Ceremony of Carols, both of which are performed by the English Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge.

The Simple Symphony Op. 4 is a delightful four-movement work that is based on themes from Britten's childhood compositions. The orchestra's performance of the work is outstanding, and they bring out the playful and whimsical nature of the music. The first movement, "Boisterous Bourrée," is lively and energetic, while the second movement, "Playful Pizzicato," is light and delicate. The third movement, "Sentimental Sarabande," is poignant and emotional, and the final movement, "Frolicsome Finale," is a lively and joyous conclusion to the work.

A Ceremony of Carols is a choral work that was composed in 1942 while Britten was crossing the Atlantic during World War II. The work is based on medieval texts and features a choir of treble voices accompanied by a harp. The performance by the Choir of St. John's College, Cambridge is exceptional, and they bring out the haunting beauty of the music. The opening movement, "Procession," sets the tone for the work, and the following movements, such as "Wolcum Yole!" and "There is no rose," are mesmerizing and enchanting. The work concludes with "This Little Babe," a powerful and dramatic movement that leaves a lasting impression on the listener.

About Benjamin Britten

British composer, conductor, and pianist. Born: November 22, 1913, in Lowestoft, UK - died: December 04, 1976, in Aldeburgh, UK. He showed talent from an early age, and first came to public attention with the a cappella choral work A Boy Was Born in 1934. With the premiere of his opera Peter Grimes in 1945, he leapt to international fame. For the next fifteen years he devoted much of his compositional attention to writing operas, establishing him as one of the leading 20th century figures in this genre. Britten's interests as a composer were wide-ranging; he produced important music in such varied genres as orchestral, choral, solo vocal (much of it written for the tenor Peter Pears), chamber and instrumental, as well as film music. He also took a great interest in writing music for children and amateur performers, and was a fine pianist and conductor. One of Britten's most important works, The War Requiem was completed 20 December 1961, and first performed 30 May 1962. Britten received many prizes and honors, including becoming a Companion of Honour in 1952, and a member of the Order of Merit in 1965.
