Review by Peter Balanck

Ba Cissoko's latest album, Sabolan, is a stunning blend of traditional West African music and modern instrumentation. The Guinean kora virtuoso has once again delivered a masterful work that showcases his exceptional musicianship and originality.

From the opening track "Nimissa," the listener is transported to a world of intricate melodies and rhythms that are both captivating and energizing. Cissoko's skillful playing on the kora, a 21-stringed harp, is complemented by the rich textures of guitar, bass, drums, and percussion, creating a dynamic and layered sound.

One of the album's standout tracks, "Kéléfaba," features a guest appearance by Malian singer Kandia Kouyaté, whose soaring vocals add a haunting quality to the already mesmerizing song. The title track, "Sabolan," is a driving, upbeat tune that showcases Cissoko's ability to blend traditional and contemporary sounds seamlessly.

About Ba Cissoko

Ba Cissoko is a Guinean world music band founded in 1999, now featuring four members, two of which are playing the traditional Kora harp. The other two band members play percussion and bass, respectively. The electronically enhanced Kora harps produce a sound somewhat similar to that of fast guitar tapping, and hence the band's sound has been described as "West Africa meets Jimi Hendrix".
